The Blizzard Round-Up 10/30
by Brian Michael Foote
Alright, so it’s not a blizzard. Still…snow in October is unsightly.
I’m sure you’re hunched over your desk squinting, trying to figure out what’s changed. Why yes, after almost two years of happily Footenoting I decided it was time for a makeover. I’d be lying though if I said it suddenly just came to me. The truth of the matter is that someone put the latest issue of Moment: Une Revue de Photo up on the front page of the Commons and I immediately realized I needed to step up my game. Good lord that’s a handsome blog. Many, many thanks to Vincent Revilla and the BMCC team for bring your magazine to the Commons!
Speaking of magazines, Alyson Vogel posted over at Lehman Faculty Professional Development about CUNY’s latest issue of Salute to Scholars with a focus on technology and learning. It’s wonderful to see so much enthusiasm for finding dynamic uses for technology in our teaching. Technology seemed to be all over the Commons this week as Joseph Ugoretz shared his thoughts on the Pearson (not Google and not open source!) LMS that was making waves. A really interesting conversation is going on over in the comments so head over and take a look. Lee Hachidoorian’s always insightful Free City blog walked us through some adventures with Chromium. Finally, Maura Smale shared her thoughts on the start of OpenAccess week about her pledge to fight for Open Access publishing. I can’t recommend this post enough! Head over and help out!
The Occupy movement was all over the news this week and all over the Commons. With rubber bullets and critically wounded marine in Oakland, Tony Picciano continued to keep us up to speed. Elsewhere Scott Voth shared another link to Occupy Wall Street’s ‘People’s Library‘ down in Liberty Plaza. It sounds like the police have been threatening to shut the library down so if you can offer some support I’m sure it’d be appreciated.
Finally this week, Tim Wilson posted an invite to Poetry Without Borders. Not only does the event look like a lot of fun, it reminded me that there used to be a ton of poetry happening all over the blogs. C’mon bloggers – get back to it!
Till next week.
