Round-Up! 12/8ish to 12/15
A couple of weeks ago I cracked a joke about INTERPOL going after Assange and Cheney. It’s old news by now that Assange turned himself in and is locked up somewhere at the moment (despite the efforts of Michael Moore) but as for Cheney…well…sometimes it really does help when you’ve got 250 million dollars at your disposal. Ah man, it feels just like old times.
Going local – who else was at day 2 of the CUNY IT Conference? It was awesome! Just ask Sarah Morgano. There were a lot of good presentations, plenty of folks from the Commons were around, and we even managed to recruit a few new members. We decided that next year that the Community Team is going to stand around our table with little bells like the Salvation Army.
Blogs!
Well first up, the CUNY Games Network has started blogging like crazy thanks to Carlos Hernandez @Carlos from over at BMCC. If you haven’t had a chance to go by their site check it out. The layout is amazing and still can’t get over slick the logo looks. One of the posts that caught my eye was something called ‘Executive Command,’ a game from iCivics that lets you take a crack at being president. Justice O’Connor likes it and the Games group would like you folks to play a few rounds and leave them some feedback. Considering how things have been going to Obama lately I clicked the button with a certain about of trepidation. I opted to try ‘Immigration Nation’ because it has the Statue of Liberty floating around with fairy wings. Awwwwwwwww.
Speaking of Obama…I expected a little more out of ‘The Obama Presidency’ in the last couple of weeks all things considered. I mean he called up Bill Clinton and had him dazzle the press on the Tax debacle, I thought you folks would be all over it! We did get some good posts this week though. There’s a great first hand account of how the UN’s climate conference played out that’s a must read.
Today I learned from the ‘Gov Docs I Love and I Hope You Will Too’ blog (and we do!) that there’s such a thing as the American Community Survey that gets published annually. It’s a fun site to dig around and I’m glad Jane Cramer @JaneC is keeping this blog up and running!
Valerie Futch @ValerieFutch posted another great round-up of EdTech happenings at ‘Te(A)ch with Purpose’ that you should definitely head over to. Usually I try to do a little synopsis of what’s going on but I’m going offer a story instead. I saw the word ‘twitterpated‘ in her post and was thoroughly convinced this was totally coined by one of CUNY’s own. A little Urban Dictionary later I realize I’m just a Twitter square. Sigh…
Finally I just saw this post up. Looks like we got a little video of Tom Scheinfeld’s talk “What Digital Humanist Like” for your viewing pleasure.
Till next week!
